Researcher Maps Show Tesla Robotaxi Geofences Smaller Than Advertised

New mapping by Koby Pierce shows actual usable pickup areas in Texas markets are 22 to 41 percent smaller than Tesla's advertised geofences.

Independent researcher Koby Pierce used emulators to test real pickup and drop-off availability across Tesla's four Texas Robotaxi markets. The usable zones range from 22 to 41 percent smaller than the boundaries shown in the app, with Austin showing the largest gap at 160 square miles versus the advertised 273 square miles.

Dallas matches most closely at 63 of 81 square miles. Houston covers 188 of 255 square miles after its recent expansion, and Fort Worth covers 105 of 144 square miles. Gaps often align with airports, railroads, and low-population zones, while most residents remain inside the served areas.

Tesla has named Las Vegas, Phoenix, Jacksonville, and San Antonio as upcoming markets.

Key facts

  • Austin usable area is 160 sq. miles versus 273 sq. miles advertised.1
  • Dallas usable area is 63 sq. miles of the advertised 81 sq. miles.1

Tesla Files Cybercab Answers but Seeks Full Secrecy

Tesla submitted its sworn responses to NHTSA by the October 30 deadline while requesting that all answers remain confidential.

Tesla responded to the federal safety audit of the Cybercab by the revised October 30 deadline. The public portion of the filing states only that the entire submission is confidential business information, with NHTSA yet to rule on the request.

The investigation opened September 3 after Cybercab rides began in Austin and covers roughly 1,000 vehicles. Regulators had asked under oath how the vehicle without steering wheel, pedals, or mirrors meets Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

Only a first-responder interaction plan dated September 3 was released publicly; all certification details stay under seal.

Key facts

  • Tesla submitted its response by the October 30 deadline and marked the entire filing confidential.12
  • NHTSA opened the audit on September 3 and issued a Special Order with 21 questions on September 10.12
  • The only public document released is Tesla's 30-page Cybercab First Responder Interaction Plan.2

NHTSA Seeks Input on OTA Remedies and Connected-Vehicle Recall Tools

NHTSA held a public meeting to explore over-the-air software fixes and connected-vehicle tools for raising recall completion rates.

NHTSA held an in-person Recalls Next meeting in Washington, D.C. on November 5, 2026, to review recall trends and gather input on OTA remedies and connected tools.

The agency administered nearly 900 recalls affecting more than 29.2 million vehicles in 2025, with completion rates falling from 68 percent on three-year-old vehicles to 18 percent on 15-year-old vehicles.

NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison noted that OTA fixes remove the need for dealer visits and that the agency oversees them the same way as physical repairs. The public docket NHTSA-2026-2014 is open for comments through December 5, 2026.

“over-the-air recall fixes generally deliver high completion rates because owners can skip a dealer visit.”

Jonathan Morrison2

Key facts

  • NHTSA administered nearly 900 vehicle safety recalls affecting more than 29.2 million U.S. vehicles in 2025.1
  • A new recall on a three-year-old vehicle averages about 68% completion while the same campaign on a 15-year-old vehicle averages about 18%.2
  • NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison said over-the-air recall fixes generally deliver high completion rates because owners can skip a dealer visit.2

Canberra 250 MW Megapack Battery Now Online

The 250 MW/500 MWh Williamsdale project has entered service as the largest battery storage system in the Australian Capital Territory.

The Big Canberra Battery at Williamsdale came online this week after multiple delays. The site uses 136 Tesla Megapack 2 XL units and connects to the ACT and New South Wales grids.

Eku Energy developed and will operate the facility for 15 years, supplying system strength and frequency control services. Peak construction created about 150 jobs.

The battery can cover one-third of Canberra’s electricity demand for up to two hours at peak times and stores excess wind and solar output.

“The Big Canberra Battery is a major piece of that future-proofing.”

Chief Minister Andrew Barr2

Giga Berlin Marks Two Years of Wastewater Recycling

Tesla's Giga Berlin factory has now recycled 465 million liters of process wastewater over two years without discharge.

Tesla Manufacturing announced on November 5 that Giga Berlin completed two years of 100 percent process wastewater recycling. The on-site treatment system has returned 465 million liters to production since the prior one-year milestone in November 2025.

The achievement covers manufacturing process water from cooling, paint, and vehicle components. It does not extend to sanitary wastewater or all factory operations.

Plant leader André Thierig called the system unique in the automotive industry and a key sustainability commitment to the region.

“This is a bigger deal than people might think! 100% process waste water recycling means ZERO liquid discharge”

André Thierig1

Tesla Reportedly Doubling Output at Giga Texas With Night Shift

Giga Texas is adding a night shift for 24/7 production through the end of 2026, according to observer Joe Tegtmeyer.

Tesla’s Austin Gigafactory is shifting to round-the-clock vehicle production by adding a night shift, creating two 12-hour shifts, per longtime drone observer Joe Tegtmeyer’s November 2 update.

General Assembly previously ran a single roughly 10-hour day shift Monday through Thursday or Friday. The new schedule keeps that base while adding overnight capacity and eliminates multi-day holiday shutdowns around Thanksgiving and Christmas–New Year.

The plant builds Model Y, Model Y L, Cybertruck, and Cybercab. Tesla has not confirmed the change or which lines will gain output.

“But now they’re on day and night shifts and they’re going to 12-hour days.”

Joe Tegtmeyer1
